HIP-TEK internal projects

Current

Cluster Computing (2000-)

Since the early days of NorduGrid project, it has been important to gain knowledge in the daily operation of commodity cluster hardware by MSc students and systems engineers. The initial push was commenced with grants from Finnish private foundations (e.g. Magnus Ehrnrooth) and the National Research Council (Finnish academia) who have been favorable in (co-)funding IT hardware. There are specific clusters for educating people in CMS Grid software usage in CERN Tier-2 operations, connecting to M-Grid/NorduGrid infrastructure and serving in-house needs like EGEE-middleware certification,  Xen virtualisation testing, Server-Based Computing and Planet-Lab initiatives. Today, most of HIP-TEK resources are hosted at CSC premises (Finnish supercomputing center) in professionally maintained High-Performance Computing and Data Center.

Server-based Computing (2004-)

Server-Based Computing (SBC), that is, replacing workstations with thin client terminals, is a novel and effective approach toward solving many typical problems in the IT infrastructure: the amount of administration work decreases, the quality of service for users and security both increase while the total cost of system decreases.

GridBlocks (2003-)

HIP-TEK's umbrella for grid software development is done under GridBlocks Java EE framework. It's an open source project under Sourceforge to offer building blocks for building grid applications easily.

Past

MDV (2001-2004)

Meta Data Visualization is a distributed, XML-based knowledge management platform with an easy interface.

Old project pages are still available at Sourceforge: http://mdv.sourceforge.net/.
