M-Grid

Building grid infrastructure for Material Sciences National Grid Infrastructure  in Finland. M-grid is a joint project between CSC, seven universities and The Helsinki Institute of Physics (HIP). The project consists of building a computer network in which computers are situated at different locations but are in shared use through grid technology. The systems are connected to the Nordic NorduGrid network, but access is currently limited to M-grid partners and CSC customers. More information is available here.

Past

NetGate-II (2006-2007), TEKES

Network Identity, Grid service access and Telecom enabled provisioning (NETGATE-II)

NetGate-2 is an industrial research project started in October 2006 and coordinated by HIP Technology Programme. Other research partners  are Technology Business Research Center (Lappeenranta University of Technology) and the Department of Computer Sciences of the University of Tampere. The project is financed by Finnish National Technology Agency (TEKES), Stonesoft, F-Secure, CSC, Elisa corporation, Valimo Wireless, and Ortikon Interactive.

The project exploits national and international research on Grid technologies and aims to leverage these research results in Finnish industry. The project has three focus areas: Security, Terminal Grid computing, and Grid business research.

The security work focuses on how users are authenticated in heterogeneous technology domains and how payment authorization for distributed 3rd party Grid services is accomplished. In practice, the project develops prototypes of missing key components for Grid service provision taking advantage of existing e-ID and billing infrastructure. This involves providing end-users a federated network identity, support for integrated security policies & distributed payment authorization across Virtual Organizations, as well as interfacing the operator accounting and billing system. Terminal Grid computing, i.e. server-based computing, focus area develops methods for utilising grid resources in desktop applications and how security components developed in the project can be integrated to work with common desktop applications. The work is validated by building a pilot system and testing it with real users. Finally, the NetGate-II project studies possible business models of various service scenarios in terms of earnings logic opportunities, roles in the value network, and general functionality of the value network.

Grid for Scientists (2003-2006), Academy of Finland

As Grid technologies are getting usable in general, many of the theoretical problems related to effective data management, replication and load balancing have been assessed in various projects, for instance European DataGrid. However, efficient means of deployment of these technologies are badly needed, in order to make the full potential of Grid usable for scientists. In this project, we propose a theoretical research and application framework that will facilitate the Grid infrastructure of the Nordic countries (NorduGrid) in a manner that it is accssible and usable for scientists in the academic community. Moreover, the project will contribute to several specific problems of accessing data and computing resources in the Grid.

NetGate-I (2005-2006), TEKES

Network Identity, Grid service access and Telecom enabled provisioning (NETGATE)

HIP Technology program has started an industrial research project in Spring 2005 called Netgate together with Technology Business Research Center (Lappeenranta Technical University).

The project will exploit international research on Grid-technologies and aims to leverage these research results in Finnish Industry. The project will explore how to integrate Grid-technologies with known solutions and best practices in Web & Mobile environments in ICT-sector business especially regarding to how users are authenticated in heterogenous technology domains and how payment authorization for distributed 3rd party Grid services is accomplished. Additionally the project will address integrated basic security layers and perimeter protection that will be linked with higher level policy enforcement. The project will also build an end-to-end Grid service showcase that leverages these Trusted Third Party security services.

The project is financed by Finnish National Technology Agency (TEKES), Nokia corporation, Elisa corporation, Stonesoft, F-secure, CSC, Capacity Networks, Ortikon Interactive and Valimo Wireless Oy.

NetGest (2003-2004)

Network Identity, Grid enabled services and Trust Networks (NETGEST)

HIP Technology program has started an industrial research project in Fall 2003 called Netgest together with Wirlab Research Center (Tampere University Extension Studies) and Telecom Business Research Center (Lappeenranta Technical University).

The project will exploit international research on Grid-technologies and aims to leverage these research results in Finnish Industry. The project will explore how to integrate Grid-technologies with known solutions and best practices in Web & Mobile environments in ICT-sector business especially regarding to how users are authenticated and authorized and how resource management is handled in an distributed infrastructure.

The project is financed by Finnish National Technology Agency (TEKES), Cygate Networks Oy, Nokia Mobile Phones, Nokia Research Center, VLP & APO and Valimo Wireless Oy.
